Lord Protector – Given too much to do

In this race it seemed to pay to be prominent with 3 of the first not being fair away from the leading rank of horses. The horse above was toward the rear and once making his run between horses he picked up rapidly but unfortunately had been given too much to do. From this performance it would seem his handicap mark of 97 is still workable and I feel he’s definitely ready to win. Lord Protector has a 44% SR (4/9) so this 4 year old is still lightly raced at staying trips so he may be one for a few years to come too. EDIT: No Handicap Mark change

Mysterious Night – Pulled his way too the front too soon

Mysterious Night under William Buick was in a decent position just behind the leaders but then found the pace too slow and after trying to restrain and settle Mysterious Night and realising it wasn’t going to happen, William allowed Mysterious Night to move forward and hit the front just after the turn in. This move didn’t work (but I didn’t mind seeing it as he wouldn’t have won if he had pulled and gained no track position). Marbaan & Holloway Boy both got past him late on but if they ran it again, I wouldn’t be surprised if Mysterious Night beat them next time. EDIT: +7 to 104 (not handicap bound)

Sacred & Stradivarius – both poor rides for me

Sacred I thought was given too much to do by Tom Marquand which was frustrating as she finished best of all. I think connections might drop her into a Group 3 next time and get her back to winning ways. Stradivarius for me should have won and with a clear run would have. The ground, momentum and speed/stamina he then used to get back alongside Kyprios cost him late on. I would be keen to take on Kyprios again with Stradivarius. EDIT: Stradivarius – no Handicap Mark change, Sacred -1 to 112 (not handicap bound)

Boy Browning – Newcomers at Goodwood?

Boy Browning came out as the highest rated newcomer (5th overall) and quietly ran a really good race on debut at Goodwood where it is really difficult to win/run well on debut. After just a furlong he found himself nearly last and behind the wall of horses. At the 2 pole he had been shuffled back further and his jockey switched him onto the nearside rail and when asked for an effort the response didn’t really happen. With half a furlong to go he was back in 12th and then really got going late on down the nearside finishing fast for 5th. The front 4 had all had a run with 3 of those expected to run a big race here so to finish 5th behind the right horses with experience, we have to think he will improve next time and in a ‘regular’ Novice/Maiden race he is sure to be a big player.

Soulcombe – step up in trip again

Soulcombe just seemed to find this happening a bit too fast but ran on well against better horses than what he had been running against and this may have caught him out. I think he’ll learn from the experience and next time be able to keep up when they start quickening from the front. I think the front 2 are both Listed/Group horses as it is so for Soulcombe to run so well against these is another reason why his effort can be marked up. A similar handicap against potentially slightly more exposed rivals and I would be confident Soulcombe can go well next time. EDIT: +2 to 83

Samahram – would argue should/would have won

Samahram was 2nd last turning into the straight and still travelling kindly. At the cut away, Frankie looked to go down the inside but Hello You and Rossa Ryan took that route so Frankie changed his mind and tried to stay straight and started to get rolling but ran into the back of Hello You and Soft Whisper which stopped her forward momentum. Under hands and heels thereafter the pair finished best of all beaten just 1 1/2 lenghts. Had their momentum not been checked at the 1 pole and Frankie asked for more effort, I am confident they would have won here.

Vee Sight – hated Goodwood

Was poorly drawn and Hollie made a decision to drop Vee Sight out the back straight away and I think that was a good move. After a furlong or so though, Hollie was already nudging away slightly on Vee Sight suggesting something wasn’t quite right. At 3 1/2 furlongs to go, they are still last with the eventual winner just in front but was firmly off the bridle. Both Hollie and William moved their mounts to the outside and whilst Warren Point consented to run on down the outside, Vee Sight wanted to go back to the rail despite Hollie having the whip in her correct hand. After every couple of reminders, you can see Hollie having to straighten Vee Sight back up and stop him from careering into those on the inside of him. Only in the final half furlong did Vee Sight run straight and he arguably finished best of all for a never nearer 4th. I don’t think they need to go up in trip but maybe the Goodwood course didn’t suit and Vee Sight would be interesting next time if not back at Goodwood. EDIT: No handicap mark change

Sinjaari – I may sound like a broken record

Sinjaari has beaten 1 horse here but has not been in a race at all. Mid-division and covered up turning for home, that was as close as they got. James Doyle and Saleymm were on his outside and James wasn’t going to let Kieran and Sinjaari out. With Shining Blue in front not picking up Kieran and Sinjaari were unable to make any effort whatsoever and he’s finished the race having not asked a single question. He’s better than this and it might be the handicapper is kind and drops him a pound or 2 on collateral form with Checkandchallenge who disappointed in a Group race. Sinjaari you would imagine would be off to York next time as his form here reads 124 with his 4th coming when he was in front way too soon. The 1m race on Thursday 18th August looks ideal. EDIT: No handicap mark change

Land of Summer – will appreciate a drop in class

After winning on debut at Brighton and then finishing 2nd at Kempton on the AW (beaten a nose), Land of Summer has been really highly tried. She ran in the Albany at Ascot and faded after racing prominently, then was well beaten in the Super Sprint at Newbury before turning up here for a very competitive Nursery. A change of tactics were employed here with Land of Summer being dropped out the back and with 2 furlongs to go was just off the back off the field but ran on really well and arguably best of all to finish a never nearer 4th. These different tactics appeared to work but was probably in a nursery that will have lots of winners come from it. She ran here off 83 and a drop into a class 3 nursery and I would be confident Land of Summer can bounce back to form over 6f with these new tactics employed again. EDIT: No handicap mark change

Classic – Should have won

This is a boring one as everyone saw the ride Classic was given. Hannon suggested before the race that he was ‘The Real Deal’ and should be aimed at the Classics next year. With that in mind, I can’t imagine they will be trying to get a handicap mark for him next time and he’ll be in a race to get a win under his belt and Pat won’t try and win it cosily. I think next time he could be a decent ‘distance bet’ as they will want to make amends for the shocker here.

Stone of Destiny – again, everyone saw it

Stone of Destiny again ran into trouble. He always seems to find trouble but you can’t deny with a clear run here he would have gone very close. He’s already due to drop 3lb and I think the handicapper will leave it at that after his 2 efforts at Goodwood and he’ll be down to a mark of 84 meaning he can’t get in the 86+ handicaps and at this stage wouldn’t be getting in the Portland Handicap at Doncaster but I think they will be aiming to get him back into the race. How can they do this? He could run over 5f at Doncaster on Saturday 13th August in a Class 3 race for horses rated 76-95. This slightly easier race than what he has been running in should see him back into the winners enclosure if he gets a clear run. EDIT: +1 to 85

Trawlerman – now this was cosy

I think had the jockey got serious on Trawlerman then he could have won by 3 or 4 lengths here and looked very impressive BUT been given a massive hike by the handicapper. He’s only won by an official 1 length and I imagine connections will be hoping he gets a rise of 6-8lb which personally I don’t think will be enough. If he gets 8lb and goes up to 105 I would be very hopeful he gets into the Ebor and would also run a MASSIVE race. He’s currently available at 16/1 for this race and I think he’s worth a bet at this stage. If he gets in and turns up, he’ll go off 6/1 or shorter! EDIT: +4 to 101

Regional – quietly ran on very strongly

The lightly raced Regional appeared to find this 6f a bit quick for him and as he’s likely to still be improving, it wouldn’t surprise me if he was stepped up to 7f soon. There is surely still a big race in him over 6f though. He was last with 2 furlongs to go and making rapid headway (similar ride from Ryan as he did on Rohaan at Ascot) when bursting through the pack. At the 1 pole he was in my opinion crucially blocked by the runner up Tabdeed who came off the the inside rail to make his move. This momentum that Regional lost was for me enough to stop him getting involved at the very front (he still finished 3rd). EDIT: No handicap mark change

Great Ambassador – Drawn on the wrong side again 

Great Ambassador finished 3rd in the Stewards Cup last year behind Commanche Falls & Gulliver with 4 of the front 5 all drawn down the near side with Great Ambassador drawn over the far side. This year he’s finished 6th comfortably beating Inver Park (8th) who was 2nd of those drawn over the far side. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 7th have all come down the nearside. He’s finished 6th AND got slightly checked by Annaf and whilst that didn’t cost him the win or even a place, it possibly cost him a position or 2. If he had however been drawn down the nearside, I would be confident he would have gone very very close. I wonder whether they will step him up to Listed and Group races or whether they set about a plan to get him back to this race next year off a similar/lower mark. EDIT: No handicap mark change

Summerghand – Hate a nightmare passage

I think Summerghand has had the worst run through here. Things didn’t look too bad at the 3 pole as whilst he was over the far side (he may not have still got there as the far side group didn’t fare great) he was nearer the centre of the track and there was a massive gap to run through, however at the 2 pole the 2 groups merged and the gap was initially closed on him by Rathbone and Inver Park. He then switched to go to the right of Inver Park and he drifted slightly across stopping this move. Both Inver Park and Summerghand then both finished really strongly through the middle of the pack with Summerghand who started the final furlong over a length down on Inver Park finishing just a short head behind at the finish. If they had both had a clear run Summerghand would have definitely finished closer. It’s possible the handicapper drops him another pound for this run and that would see him down to just 99 and you would imagine he’ll go back for the Ayr Gold Cup (Never nearer 8th last year off 112). It’s a decent pot which is what I think they will be targeting with an 8 year old rather than going back to Listed & Group races. EDIT: -2 to 98

These blogs are worth reading and the horses added to your NagMe. Yesterday Shaladar went back to Hamilton over 1m (the same CD when Liam highlighted him). He won yesterday at 11/2 after finishing 2nd on his 1st run after being highlighted.
