Over the last few years we have been following different jockey agents and one that has really stood out to us is Sash Righton. A former jockey Sash started his career as a jockey agent back in 2005. Last year could well have been a turning point for Sash as he was and still is the agent for Tom Marquand.
After a great breakthrough season for Tom Marquand he won the Apprentice Title narrowly beating Jack Garritty. Still an apprentice this season (although he has now lost his claim) he is well on the way to going close again this season and currently leads from Josephine Gordon, Edward Greatrex and Adam McNamara all of whom are having great seasons.
Tom is widely regarded by many jockeys as one of the young apprentices coming through who could well be a future champion jockey.
Sash has been doing a great job this season for Tom getting him more and more outside rides (Tom is based with Richard Hannon) and has had rides for some very prominent owners including Middleham Park Racing, Mr Ponsonby, Khalid Abdullah, Godolphin and Al Shaqab racing.
Tom has become somewhat of a specialist at some courses including Bath, Brighton and Chepstow and it’s no surprise that Sash keeps getting him good rides at these courses.
With Tom going well again, Sash looks to have found another top quality young jockey in George Wood. George has already ridden 21 winners this calendar year which is a great achievement for such a young jockey.
George has recently lost his 7lb claim and now can only claim 5lb which is fantastic for a jockey at this early stage of his career.
George only had 6 rides in 2015 but has had 203 this year of which he has finished in the Top 3 in 35% of these.
George is currently based at James Fanshawe’s and he has struck up a great relationship with one of James’ horses in Knight Owl. George has ridden this one 3 times and has finished 1st, 3rd and 2nd on this horse. Knight Owl could well be aimed at the Betfred Cambridgeshire and George’s 5lb claim would come in very handy here. George has ridden Knight Owl over the Cambridgeshire Course and Distance when winning the Suffolk Stakes Class 2 handicap which is George’s biggest win to date.
Both of these apprentice jockeys look like jockeys with big futures and Sash looks like the perfect agent to get your career off to a flyer as an apprentice jockey and it will be interesting to hear what new young recruit Sash adds to his jockey list next season.
Whilst Sash has supported these 2 apprentices in the early stages of their career he has also recently taken on a multiple Group 1 winning jockey in Tom Queally.
Tom Queally is best known for his partnership with the mighty Frankel which Tom rode in every single race in which he won all of them. After achieving 81 wins in the 2014 calendar year this dropped to 65 in 2015 and up to September 2016 his calendar wins stood at just 31 however 5 of these have been in the last 2 weeks and it’s in this period that Sash has taken over as his agent. In actual fact, since writing the first draft of this post, Tom Queally has ridden another 2 winners!
Tom Queally has started his new partnership with Sash in great style and this includes winning a Group 3 race aboard Madame Dancealot and finishing 2nd on Saturday in the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock when he and the winner pulled clear and surely The Tin Man and Tom Queally are Group 1 winners in the making.
With the support and booking from Sash and the talent of Tom Marquand, George Wood and Tom Queally this team looks very strong and I expect to see them winning some of the big races in the remainder of this season and over the next few seasons.
