A small field for this race however all eyes were on Sizing John who had won 2 hurdle races last season including a Grade 1 before finishing 2nd, 3rd and 2nd behind Douvan. Making his chase debut he was settled behind the leaders initially before jumping himself to the front with about 1 mile to go. His jumping was fluent throughout and turned into the straight still hard on the bridle. Asked to quicken between the 2nd last and last he put a few lengths between himself and the runner up. He jumped the last really well and pulled away well to win decisively. He was shortened from 20/1 and 18/1 into 14/1 for the Arkle and will face much sterner tests in his next few runs.

The following race on the card once again featured a horse in No More Heroes who had run some very good races over hurdles including 3rd at Cheltenham in the Albert Bartlett when probably a bit unlucky. Chasing was always going to be his game and a 3m trip plus would be his optimum so it was no surprise to see Bryan Cooper bounce sitting prominent. With 6 to jump he was allowed to edge into the lead and he jumped the next 3 really well. He turned into the straight and was asked to kick on and once again in between the 2nd last and last he moved away with consummate ease. He jumped the last big and bold and clearly had loads left in the tank. He pulled away effortlessly and was cut from 12/1 to 8/1 for the RSA Chase.
