Champagne Well @ 18/1

I think the price we can get on Champagne Well here is crazy if we are prepared to forgive him last season when he was found to have a hairline fracture in his back. Dropping back over hurdles I think he has lots more to come off just 136.

Some of his efforts over this sort of trip include 3rd in Grade 3 Handicap Hurdle at Sandown behind the now 153 rated Third Wind, winning at Cheltenham in a Novice hurdle and finishing 2nd at Cheltenham behind Thyme Hill with Happygolucky and Some Day Soon behind. After then being stepped up to 3m where he ran well but shaped like this was stretching his stamina he was dropped back to 2m5f for the Coral Cup in 2020. Backed in from 25/1 a week before the race down to 8/1 and was still going well when pecking badly at the 2nd last and pulling up quickly after.

That run at Cheltenham came off a mark of 141 and he runs here off a 5lb lower mark and is double the price.

This is not a dig or criticism, I think it’s great marketing but we also know that Fergal O’Brien has recently joined forces with Graeme McPherson and what better way to get your new brand out there than by winning the first big National Hunt race of the season.
