Beaten By / Beating on a horse's history

Form is only as good as the horses a run was measured against. Beaten By / Beating tells you exactly who that was, and takes you straight to their record.

When you read a horse's form, the next question is always: beaten by what? A narrow defeat by a future Group winner is worth far more than a win over nothing much. The Beaten By / Beating column puts that answer on every row of the history.

What it shows

It sits straight after the Beaten column:

• A beaten run: the name of the horse that won that race.
• A winning run: the name of the runner-up it beat.

A dead heat for first lists both winners. You'll see a dash where nobody is known yet: a non-runner, a run abroad, or a race whose placings aren't in.

Every name is a link to that horse's own history, opening in a new tab. So in one click you can check whether the horse that beat yours has gone on to prove itself, or whether the one it beat has since won.

Hover for the finish

Hover the Beaten or Beaten By / Beating cell and a card shows how the run finished: where the horse came, how many lengths it was behind the winner (or what it won by), how far it was behind the horse in front, and who won. The table rounds distances to the nearest quarter of a length; the card gives you the exact figure.
