Why a horse becomes a non-runner

A declared runner can be withdrawn at any point up to the off: the ground changes and connections decide the going no longer suits, the horse is found lame or is unwell on the morning, the vet withdraws it at the start, or it refuses to enter the stalls. Trainers can also withdraw at the declaration stage when the field or the draw does not suit.

A non-runner changes the race for everyone else, so our ratings are recalculated the moment one is announced. Every remaining runner is re-scored and re-ranked against the field that is actually going to race, which is why the numbers you see on a card at 2pm are not necessarily the numbers that were there at nine in the morning.

See the full card for any race on the Fast Results page once it has run, or read how the model works on our ratings page.
