Winning times and beaten distances

Once a race is run, we add the winning time, measured against our own standard for the course and trip, and how far each horse was beaten.

The clock and the winning margins tell you plenty about how a race was run. Once the result is in, we add both to the card.

The winning time

In the race header (the teal band with the overrounds) you'll find the winning time, shown against our own standard for that course and distance. That comparison is the useful bit, it tells you whether the race was run fast or slow for the track and trip, rather than just giving you a raw time to make sense of on your own.

The Beaten column

The Beaten column shows how far each horse finished behind the winner (the running total, not the gap to the horse in front). We keep it clean and readable:

• Racing's named gaps stay as words, nse (nose), shd (short-head), hd (head) and nk (neck).
• Everything else is a decimal in lengths, so 0.5 is half a length, 0.25 a quarter, and a bigger beating reads 11.25 rather than a fiddly fraction.

Two things to know

• These fill in once the result is imported, so a race that has just been run may show blank for a short while.
• Very occasionally an amended placing and the as-raced distances won't line up, a horse the stewards promoted or demoted. That's the stewards' room at work, not a mistake on the card.
