Last Year's Winner on the race card

Many races now show a Last Year's Winner block: the horse that took the same race a year ago, with its price, connections and our RTR Rank, for Premium and Pro members.

Course and race form matters, and few pointers are sharper than the horse that won the very same race a year ago. RatingTheRaces now surfaces it right on the race card for Premium and Pro members.

Last Year's Winner

Below the race header you'll find a Last Year's Winner block on races we have a match for. It shows the horse that won this race last year, with its starting price, exchange price (XSP), trainer, jockey and sire, and our RTR Rank for it that day. The horse's name links straight through to that race in our ratings history, so you can study the full form of the race it won.

The feature is in beta, so you'll see a "beta testing" label on the block while we expand and refine it. Not every race has one: coverage is strongest on the big festival and feature meetings, so if a card shows "no corresponding race", we simply don't have a confirmed match for it yet.

Show it and highlight repeat runners

Two options in the settings menu (the gear at the top of the ratings) control it:

• Show Last Year's Winner turns the block on or off.
• Highlight Last Year's Winners picks out any of today's runners, or their trainer, jockey or sire, who feature in last year's result, shading those cells gold so a course-and-race specialist jumps off the page.

Last year's whole field, not just the winner

Added on 28 September 2026 for Professional members. The block always named last year's winner; now we carry last year's full field, so any horse in today's race that ran in this race a year ago is picked out on the card by where it finished.

• 1st, 2nd and 3rd get a filled cell on the horse's name: gold, silver and bronze.
• Anyone else who ran in it gets their name in plum, fallers and pulled up included.

In that example, Count Palatine won this race last year and carries the gold cell, Quest For Fun was second and carries silver, and Abduction, who finished down the field, has his name in plum. One glance tells you three of today's runners have been here before, and how each of them got on.

The placings come from our own database rather than the block itself, so they cover the whole field and not just the horse that won.

Hover a name for last year's run

Since 1 October, hovering a horse that ran in this race last year shows you that run, rather than the weight hover you get on everything else.

It names the race as it was run last year and where the horse finished, then gives you both sides of that run: what it carried, its RTR Rank, its official rating and how that compares with today's mark, its draw and DBD, and on the right the finishing position, how far it was beaten, its SP and Exchange SP, the going and the jockey. Rows that match today are marked, so you can see at a glance what has changed and what has not.

Switching each placing on and off

Four switches in Tools, under Highlight Last Year's Winners. All four are on by default, and each one works on its own, so you can keep the winner and drop the rest if you only care about the horse that actually won.

These are separate from Highlight Last Year's Winners, which shades the trainer, jockey and sire columns. You can run the placings with that switch off and still see them.

How to read it

A horse back to defend its crown, especially from the same yard, is exactly the kind of angle the raw ratings can miss. With Highlight Last Year's Winners on, any such runner is shaded gold in the grid; cross-check it against its RTR Rank and figures for today, because proven course-and-race form on top of a strong rating is a powerful combination.

And because the winner links into our history, you can open the race it won and see exactly what it beat, and how it was rated then against how it rates now.
